Description

Check out the Calendar of Activities below and visit the website www.freewebs.com/strawbalestudio for more information and updates.

There is also a Case Study of the Studio by the State of Michigan Energy Office: https://mi.gov/documents/CIS_EO_Straw_Bale_Case_Study_101340_7.pdf

The Strawbale Studio is a natural building project located on rural land one hour north of Detroit. It is an exploration into the use of local materials... found in nature... to gracefully sculpt a space that nourishes the soul. It's artistic shape, thatched roof and earthen plasters make this a unique and enchanting structure!

Tours, workshops, natural building activities, internships and volunteer opportunities are available. Presentations can be made for your group on site or at your location. "Earth Art" sculptures are also for sale.

We humans, like all other of earth’s creatures, have an innate sense and ability to create our own dwellings! Throughout the world homes are created from materials at hand. We can reclaim this wisdom and joy, building in community with each other and the natural world! We can also add natural materials and sustainable ideas to our existing dwellings!

Check out the classes and opportunities below and visit the website www.freewebs.com/strawbalestudio for more information and updates !

Profile and Credentials

Deanne Bednar writes: My background is an educator, (Middle School Art and Sustainable Futures class) artist and musician. I have illustrated three natural building books: The Cobbers' Companion, The Hand-Sculpted House and the Natural Plaster Book, and have done much practical and sculptural work on the Strawbale Studio. I am currently the coordinator of the programing at the Strawbale Studio, teaching introductory workshops on earthen sculpting, natural paints and plasters and natural building. I am also creating "Earth Art", which explores our place in nature and the whole of Life.

Philosophy and Comments

I am exploring how to live in a way that enhances Life, that supports this awesome, rich and diverse world. I like to share earth-skills with others, learn together and help network those things which are reverential and sustainable. As a member of the Detroit Green Map team, I am seeking to bring forward to awareness inspiring places, businesses and organizations that are already present and ready to serve. In the construction of the Strawbale Studio and "Earth Art", I seek to connect myself and others directly to hope and beauty.

ROCKET STOVE WORKSHOP br>
Come help construct a heated bench using a Rocket Stove design. Efficient, hand-built, flexible design. Bring food to share. Payment due 1 week in advance. Call 248 628 1887 or email (ecoartdb@aol.com) to register.

Fees: Introductory price $25. Discount if you bring a friend: 2 for $40 !

For this fee you can participate in one or all of the days.

Ianto Evans, co-author of the book "Rocket Stoves ~ A Revolution in Wood Heating" (and a triple Leo!) writes: "Rocket Stoves are the ultimate in efficiency, reducing wood to carbon dioxide and water vapor, with a little ash. Coupled with heat storage in a cob bench bed or floor they provide gentle heat for up to two days without an all night smoldering fire that poisons the neighbors and heats mainly the sky. They are quite safe for small children as there are no dangerously hot surfaces. Rocket stoves work by burning wood in a completely new way than providing all their heat for cooking, toasting, baking, or heating water or people. They keep you snug. And previously unskilled people can build them of local and recycled materials at almost no cost. Rocket stoves incorporate the heat storage of a $10,000 mass stove, the convenience of a woodfired cookstove, the efficiency of a pellet furnace and limitless flexibility in design, all without moving parts, fans or motors. Are they a new idea? Relatively: we developed them without publicity about 20 years ago. Now they are increasingly popular in North America and Denmark, where traditional brick masons have adopted them to fit into artistic homes."In a message dated 10/27/2005 8:54:46 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, davsebo@yahoo.com writes:

Agenda: We intend to build the "core" part on Saturday, November 12, perhaps finishing enough on Sunday, November 13 in order to do a trial burn before we install the "heat mass" part. The heat mass part on the stove is perhaps the simpler part, and will be done probably mostly the second weekend (November 19 & 20). The second weekend we could do a simple mock-up of part of a rocket. To learn how to build, the first weekend should be more helpful.

Some folks will be staying overnight. Let us know what days you will be attending. Send your payments to Deanne Bednar (see below) one week in advance.

Call Dave Sebolt, 734-747-8860 or call/email Deanne with additional questions.
